About Nunavut

Nunavut is the largest and northernmost territory in Canada. Even though it is the largest territory, it is the least populous. In 2014, the population was 36,687 for the 2,093,190 square-kilometre patch of land. That's only one person for every 65 square kilometres!

The province can only be accessed by air and sea as it is not linked by roads or highways. Travelling between Nunavut communities is generally done through ship or aircraft, but in some cases it's also possible to travel by dogsled and snowmobile.

The province is comprised of the mainland, part of the Arctic Archipelago and all of the islands in Hudson Bay, James Bay and Ungava Bay including the Belcher Islands. Nunavut shares land borders with: the Northwest Territories, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and Labrador. By sea, the province shares borders with Greenland, Quebec, Ontario and again Manitoba. Due to its high latitude, Nunavut experiences a polar climate in most regions with temperatures in July never going higher than an average of 63 degrees Celsius in July.

Blessed with rich wildlife, Nunavut offers an unforgettable experience for all to enjoy. The territory of Nunavut is home to a wide array of amazing landscapes. The region also has a large number of Beluga whales and is home to over 500,000 birds. The province has several bird sanctuaries and 24 parks with an abundance of animals like walrus, musk-ox, birds, and polar bears.

Nunavut produces various control instruments and equipment for measuring, navigation and medical equipment. Other popular exports from the region include prepared and packed sea food and transport related equipment, with goods being exported to countries like United States, China and the United Kingdom.

The Department of Healthcare offers programs to help Nunavut residents pay for medical treatments, prescription drugs, medical supplies and medical travel. Each resident is covered under the Nunavut Health Care Plan when they meet the eligibility criteria.

It is responsibility of the Department of Education to provide kindergarten to grade 12 education to residents of all communities in Nunavut.
